On December 2, 2009, Evert “Ev” W. Mullen went on to be with his Lord, having exemplified a Christian life thoroughly enjoyed and well lived for all who knew him. He won the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, shared heartfelt opinions and liked his hash browned potatoes extra crispy.
Evert was born on July 9, 1926, to John and Sara Mullen in Thornhurst, PA, and on October 3, 1970, married Charlette Crist, “the love of my life,” in a joyful union that modeled true love for three successive generations.
Evert spent his early years on a farm without electricity or running water where he cultivated crops, a work ethic and a strong will second to none. He went on to expand his horizons and see the world while faithfully serving our country in the U.S. Army, 99th Division, 15th Field Artillery, European Theater, in France, Belgium, Germany, Czechoslovakia, crossing the Rhine and Blue Danube Rivers and valiantly fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. Upon his return he was employed for ten years with Armour and Company before joining Schultz Piggly Wiggly where he went on to lead by example for 34 years as the ever-friendly and hard-working manager of stores in Racine, Milwaukee and finally in Kenosha; establishing fond memories of a cheerful smile and words of encouragement in a wealth of customers and employees.
Evert had a genuine and infectious zest for life evident to all who knew him in his work and in his retirement. His obviously joyful spirit was enthusiastically evident in hunting, fishing and golfing; while continuously improving and landscaping his home in Racine and his retirement cottage in New Lisbon; and on adventures and trips here and there with his beloved Charlette. Most of all, Evert loved the Lord and worshipped at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection where he served twice as chairman of the Evangelism and Personnel Committees and was a regular usher.
Evert is survived by his loving wife, Charlette; his sister, Alma Condon of Butler, Pennsylvania; sons, William Mullen and Robert Mullen, both of Jacksonville, Florida; daughter, Candy Mullen of South Haven, MN; sister-in-law, Jeanne Driver; step-children, Holly (Harvey) Rich, Paul (Charlotte) Crist, Toni (Randy) Savaglio, and Cherri (Fritz) Cape, all of Racine; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren (for all of whom he leaves a legacy of what it means to be a person of honesty and integrity); nieces; nephews; and many, many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, daughter, Debbie Paulich of Union Grove; his first wife, Dorothy Driver; brothers; Robert, John, Wesley and Jesse; and sister, Ruth Marshall. He will be sorely missed.
Funeral services will be held at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 322 Ohio St., Racine, on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at 1 p.m. with Rev. James Barsch officiating. Private entombment will be held at West Lawn Memorial Park Crypts. Visitation will be held at the church from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Mullane, Dr. Kelly, Dr. Willard, Dr. Dizadi, and their staffs for their excellent and compassionate care of Evert.
