Rose was born in Cosenza, Italy, on June 11, 1910, to Lewis and Congetta (nee Spozeare) Falbo.She raised both of her daughters by herself, often working two jobs to support them. After working several years in various Racine restaurants, at Rainfair, and at Rae Motors from which she retired at age 62. She was a member of St. Lucy’s Catholic Church and of the Christian Mothers at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for many years. She also belonged to Vittoria Colonna Lodge for over 60 years. For much of her life, on the weekends, she worked in the kitchen at Roma Lodge, catering weddings and special events.
Little Grandma, as she was called by the family, was a resident of St. Monica’s Senior Citizen Home for a short time, where she enjoyed participating in many activities and attended mass daily. When she became ill and unable to stay at St. Monica’s, the Zickus family cared for her until God called her home.
Surviving relatives include her daughters, Minnie (Eugene) Modesti and Mary Ann (David) Porcaro. These are very special people who will always remember her as Little Potato and Baby Grandma. Her grandchildren are Rose Ann (Bye) Zickus, Eugene (Kelly) Modesti, Jr., Kathy (Pat) Neis, Cindy Vance, and Laura (John) Rather. She also has nine great-grandchildren: Chad Zickus, Carrie Conner, Sarah Gillmore, Danielle Scott, Nicole Neis, Karly and Michael Modesti, and David and Jacob Vance. Her great-great-grandchildren are Hope Rose and Hannah Conner, and Jordan, Dylan, Natalie, and Bryanna Zickus.
Her family members would like to give special thanks to everyone from Hospice Alliance, especially Pat Leckman, who provided compassionate end-of-life care to Little Grandma until her final days. They treasure Pat for her kind and loving heart. She is truly an angel. Father Mark Jones of St. Lucy’s Catholic Church, who frequently visited Little Grandma, never failed to make her laugh and smile, and provided her with spiritual guidance. No words can thank him for what he has done for Rose and her family.
Everyone who met Rose was touched by her big heart and caring, humorous personality. She always gave a helping hand to anyone who needed it, putting her loved ones before herself. With her rosary in hand, she prayed for her friends and family every day of her life. They will never forget her unconditional love.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Rose at St. Lucy’s Catholic Church on Monday, December 14, 2009, at 10 a.m. and led by Father Mark Jones. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, Highway 32. Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and at the church on Monday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass. The Vittoria Colonna services will take place at 6:45 p.m. on Sunday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Hospice Alliance or St. Monica’s Senior Citizen Home.
