Nancy E. (Laning) Sobczak

Nancy E. Sobczak, (Nee: Laning), passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 14, 2011, age 60 years, after a courageous battle with cancer. Her devoted husband of 39 years, Robert, was at her side. She is also survived by numerous loving cousins and wonderful supportive friends. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Ralph and Cele Laning; her loving sister, Irene Laning Mason; and by many loving uncles and aunts.

Nancy was an extremely accomplished professional woman. After growing up on a dairy farm in Dousman, Wisconsin, she worked in training, engineering, marketing and management positions at MSOE, IBM, ITT, Johnson Controls, Alan Bradley, GE, Square D, other companies and family businesses. She earned a BSEE in 1970, a MS in 1972, and a PhD in Electrical Engineering in 2007, all from Marquette University. She served two terms on the State of Wisconsin Examining Board of Professional Engineers. Nancy was awarded two United States patents. She became a licensed private pilot in 1975. Nancy had many diverse passionate interests including singing, sewing, gourmet cooking, herbal remedies, Marquette basketball, flying and air racing.

She was a selfless family care-giver and gifted personal coach who truly enjoyed helping others and watching them grow successfully. Nancy will truly be missed by everyone whose life she touched.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 20, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Church of the Gesu, 1145 W. Wisconsin Ave, Milwaukee 53233. Private interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery, Milwaukee. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Friday at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and on  Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Memorials may be made in Nancy’s memory to the Rev. Thaddeus J. Burch, SJ Scholarship Fund at Marquette University P.O. Box 1881 Milwaukee, WI 53201.

Her husband would like to thank everyone at Froedtert’s Breast Care Center and the Zilber Family Hospice for their expert and tender care of Nancy.
