Mt. Pleasant -- Richard G. Slater, 85, passed away on August 4, 2011, at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare-All Saints.
Richard was born in Tomahawk to the late George and Edith (nee: Wells) Slater on January 17, 1926. He has been a resident of Racine since 1948. On June 26, 1954, he was united in marriage to Dolores Koss in Racine.
Mr. Slater was a graduate of Tomahawk High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy for 42 years, serving as a Gunner's mate in WWII beginning in 1944 until his retirement from the service in 1986. Mr. Slater was proud to work in delivery for Progressive Dairy, Harmony Dairy and Massey Ferguson. He also was employed at Landshine Fast Food Inc. for 11 years until his retirement in 1965.
Richard was a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church. He enjoyed traveling to Door County. He was an avid Green Bay Packer and Milwaukee Brewer fan. But, most of all, he was proud of his family and his dream home.
Richard will be dearly missed by his wife, Dolores; children, Scott (Christine) Slater and Jodi (Larry) Borchert; two grandchildren, Kevin Borchert and Tyler Slater; sister, Dawn (Gene) Moss; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two sons, Ricky and Terry Slater; and two sisters, Marge Kleinsmith and Patricia Dotter.
Funeral services in honor of Richard will be held at Wilson Funeral Home with full United States Navy military honors on Sunday, August 7, 2011, at 5 p.m. with Rev. Randall Poppe and Rev. Thomas Chryst officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family on Sunday from 3 p.m. until the time of service. Private inurnment will take place at West Lawn Memorial Park.
