James A. Kortendick

STURTEVANT, WI -- James A. Kortendick, age 80, passed away Monday, February 16, 2009. James was born in Racine, son of the late Aloys and Gertrude (Nee: Lartz) Kortendick.

James was a graduate of William Horlick High School “Class of 1947.” During the Korean War, James proudly served with the United States Army while stationed in Germany. On June 11, 1955, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, he was united in marriage to Barbara Williams. He was employed by the Wisconsin Telephone Company for thirty six years from 1947-1983 and also drove school bus for several years. James was a longtime member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church where he served as usher and Eucharistic Minister. He also belonged to Knights of Columbus #4831, American Legion Post 494, Sturtevant Lion’s Club where he was a transporter. James served on the board for the Catholic Cemetery Association, Sturtevant Village Board for six years, and was involved as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Above all he was a devoted and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Barbara; his children, Patrick (Patty) Kortendick, Mary Jane (Jerry) Andersen, Shelly (Jerry) Gavin, Nancy (Bob) Garbo, Carol (Les) Paur, Ann (Bill) Wehnert; 23 grandchildren, Joseph Kortendick, Michael (Mindy) Kortendick, Carrie (Corey) Thompson, Christina and Catherine Kortendick; Sarah, Emily, Peter, Molly Sue and Michael Andersen; Daniel, Mary Rose, Margaret, and Theresa Gavin; Judith, Angela, and Andrew Garbo; Elizabeth, Bridget, Genevieve, and Monica Paur; Matthew and John Paul Wehnert; three great-grandchildren, Ben and James Kortendick, Allison Thompson; brothers, Kenneth (Dorothy) Kortendick, Tom (Helene) Kortendick, David (Yvonne) Kortendick; sister, Barbara Piechocki; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mary Kortendick, Bernard (Linda) Williams, Ron Hibbard; nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and special friends, Ken and Viv Clark, Jim and Hilma Hayek (card club for 53 years). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Judith Rose; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bernard and Rose Williams; brother, Robert Kortendick; brother-in-law, Charles Piechocki; and sister-in-law, Jane Hibbard.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 3100 95th Street, Sturtevant, on Friday, February 20, 2009, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Edward Carrol officiating. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. (Rosary recited at 6:45 p.m.) and at the church on Friday from 9 a.m. until time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Catholic Church Extension Society, 150 S. Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL 60606 have been suggested.
