Erland L. Muoio, age 85, passed away Monday, March 21, 2011, at the Heartwood Home, Appleton, WI. Erland was born in Racine, October 6, 1925, son of the late Joseph and Josephine (Nee: Phillips) Muoio.
Erland attended Washington Park High School. He was drafted into the United States Army at the age of 17, serving in the European Theatre from 1942-1945. Erland returned to Racine and attended the University of Wisconsin Racine Extension majoring in chemistry. On December 26, 1946, he was united in marriage to Doris Jensen who preceded him in death, October 31, 2005. Erland was employed by SC Johnson and Son as Research Chemist for many years until his retirement in 1987. While at SC Johnson, having invented many products, most notably Pledge, he was the proud recipient of the distinguished “Carnuba Palm Award.” Years later he was nominated into the Washington Park High School Hall of Fame. Erland was a member of Bethania Lutheran Church and the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed working in his yard, traveling -- including many trips throughout Europe, and visiting and enjoying his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.
Erland is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Susie Muoio of Appleton and their children, Michael and Jamie Muoio; his son-in-law, Joe Lawrence of Milwaukee; his grandchildren, Carlin and Nick Arnold and their children, Hannah, Ava and Noah; Erin and Brian Beres and their children, Taylor, Madison and Tye; Lisa and Steve Thomas and their children, Shawn, Joey and Tyler; Kim and Mark Holman and their children, Alexandra, Jake and Carson; sister, Sally (Dick) Hamilton of Monterey Park, CA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ken and Shirley Jensen of Racine; other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara Lawrence, in 2009; and brothers, Louis and Michael.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, March 24, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Bethania Lutheran Church, 4120 Wright Ave., with Rev. Pam Lange officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Graceland Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Thursday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society have been suggested.
