Lois J. (Newman) Hammes

Lois J. Hammes, age 89, passed away on Monday, March 7, 2011, at Lakeshore Manor. Lois was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 21, 1921, daughter of the late Herbert J. and Elta J. (Nee: James) Newman and was a Racine resident for over eighty years.

On May 21, 1942, she was united in marriage to Quinten A. Hammes who preceded her in death on October 27, 1963. She owned and operated The Children’s Corner for many years. Lois was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church. Actively involved in politics, Lois was a member of the Racine Unified School Board and numerous other community and civic organizations. Her interest also included gardening and playing bridge. More than anything she cherished time spent with her family and will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her children, Quinten (Joan) Hammes of Racine, Cynthia (Richard) McKenna of West Hartford, CT, Heather Hammes of Houston, TX, Jennifer (Greg) Berg of Racine; her grandchildren, Lee Ann (Steve) Stremke, Rebecca (Todd) Reilly, Quin (Renee) Hammes, Chris McKenna, Nicholas McKenna; her great-grandchildren, Amy, Laura, and Eric Stremke, Sarah and Ryan Reilly; sister-in-law, Alida Newman of Racine; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, John “Jack” (Polly) Newman, Robert (Edie) Newman, Richard Newman; and stepfather, John Kosterman.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 14, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Glenn Lawson officiating. Entombment will follow at Mound Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Sunday at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and Monday at the funeral home from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Healthcare Network, the Racine County Pony Club or the Caledonia Conservancy have been suggested.
