Betty Jane Herman

Mrs. Betty Jane Herman, 86, passed away peacefully at her home on August 6, 2009.

A lifetime resident, Betty Jane was born in Racine on September 20, 1922, to the late Gioachino and Gertrude (nee: Lowe) Micheloni. On April 16, 1945, she was united in marriage to Arnold Albert Herman.

Betty graduated as salutatorian, Class of 1940, from Washington Park High School and worked as an Educational Assistant for over 20 years for Racine Unified School District, retiring in 1988.

Mrs. Herman was a Charter member of Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Church. She served as the President and Education Chair Person of the WELCA and as the Head of Social Ministry on the Church Council. She also coordinated the church newsletter, was an active choir member, and taught Sunday School. Mrs. Herman participated in the card ministry to homebound members as a part of the Mt. Pleasant Visitation Program and also coordinated the Campbell's Soup and We Care Ministries. In the past, she enjoyed being a Brownie Leader. Her hobbies included knitting and crocheting.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Jean (Dr. Takayoshi Matsuda) Herman; one brother, Kenneth Micheloni; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold, on September 12, 2001; and her sister, Dorothy Walter Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Church, 1700 S. Greenbay Road, on Thursday, August 13, 2009, at 10 a.m. Entombment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. There will be visitation at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service.
