Mrs. Jessie Elizabeth (nee: Allen) Herman, 74, found peace on Sunday, August 9, 2009, after battling cancer for several months.
Jessie was born in Port Washington, NY, on March 13, 1935, to the late LeRoy and Charlotte (nee: Hyde) Allen. She grew up on the beaches of Long Island, NY. She enjoyed swimming and digging for clams with her sisters, brothers and cousins. She was an avid Brooklyn Dodgers fan, and her family went on regular outings to Radio cIty Music Hall and Coney Island.
As a young woman, she worked as a purchasing agent with a GS5 rating for the Special Devices Center at the Office of Naval Research, based in Sands Point, NY. During this time she meet her future husband, Zeke, a southeastern Wisconsin native, who was stationed on guard duty at the base where she worked. They were united in marriage on June 19, 1955, at St. Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church in Port Washington, NY.
The couple settled in Racine and raised three daughters. Jessie was a Girl Scout leader, and later worked secretarial jobs at the Racine County Planning Council and the Racine Opportunity Center. She enjoyed fishing, ceramics, knitting and crotcheting, and in her later years, she was an awesome scrapbooker. She loved spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren, on fishing trips, biking trips and leisurely vacations in Door County. She was a kind, softspoken person who always had a smile on her face and a song to share.
Jessie is survived by her husband, Ralph “Zeke” Herman of Racine; daughters, Theresa J. Herman (Donna Hillebrand) of Minneapolis, MN, Stefanie (Jim) Rooney of Racine, and Charlotte L. (Paul) Goska of Sobieski, WI; grandchildren, Jacqueline, Joshua, Jessica and Sophie; and great-grandchildren, Adrian, Xavier and Tallisa.
A private ceremony will be held for the family only.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Odders and the nurses and staff at Wheaton Franciscan Cancer Care Center for their superb and compassionate care.
