Joseph C. Cuccio Sr., 76 passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, August 15, 2009, at Wheaton Franciscan Health Care-All Saints.
Joe was born in Racine, September 20, 1932, son of Anthony and Agnes (nee: Johnson) Cuccio. On June 27, 1952, he was united in marriage to Kathleen B. Sweetman at Holy Communion Lutheran Church.
Joe was a graduate of Washington Park High School “Class of 1951” and went on to further his education by graduating from Lawrence College in 1955. Joe taught one year of High School while coaching football and hockey, before embarking on a sales/sales administration career in the leather manufacturing business, retiring in 1995 from Pfister & Vogel Tanning Co., Milwaukee, WI.
Joe was past President of The Kiwanis Club of Greater Racine, member of the Sales, Marketing and Executive Club, past board member of the Racine Kilties Drum & Bugle Corps of Racine and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
Joe loved the outdoors, including hunting, fishing and camping with his family, and he especially enjoyed his numerous Canadian fishing trips with his sons and close friends. Joe, Kathy and family spent many happy days at their cabin north of Eagle River, WI.
This love of the outdoors was passed down to his children and grandchildren. He was an Eagle Scout and swimming instructor at the Racine Boy Scout Camp.
Traveling was also an important part of Joe and Kathy’s life, with trips to Europe, Alaska and Caribbean cruises with his family.
He was a lifelong member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church and an active member on the church council. Joe was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Joe is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathleen; sons, Joseph Jr. (MaryAnn), and Jon (Susan); daughters, Joleen (James) Carlson, and Joan (Kevin) Watson, all of Racine; grandchildren, Nicole (Brett) Hauch, Lauren Cuccio, Courtney (Jason Burge) Carlson, Jessica Watson, Gina Cuccio, Jacob DeGroot and Andrew DeGroot; brother Richard (LoEtta) Cuccio of Wind Lake, WI., sister Margret Cuccio of Milwaukee; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and dear friends,
Joe was preceded in death his parents, brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Arthur Balian, Jack Sweetman, Jim and Arlene Sweetman, and other relatives and dear friends.
Funeral services will be held at Holy Communion Lutheran Church, 2000 West 6th St., (Mark Hurn Room) on Tuesday August 18, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jeff Barrow officiating. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. There will be a visitation at Sturino Funeral Home on Monday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday at church from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Holy Communion Lutheran Church, c/o Boundary Waters Camp or American Diabetes Assoc., 2323 N. Mayfair Rd. Suite 502, Wauwatosa, WI 53226-1507 have been suggested by the family.
The family of Joseph Cuccio would like to thank his many doctors, his nurses and staff at Ridgewood Care Center and St. Luke's Hospital in Milwaukee, the Hospice care staff at WFH-All Saints Hospital in Racine, and dear friends Pastor Jeff Barrow and Pastor Kathy Brown, for all their loving and compassionate care.
