Sister Geraldine Martin, O.P.

Sister Geraldine Martin, O.P., 95, passed away at Golden Living Center, Kenosha on Sunday, August 23, 2009.

Frances Elizabeth was born June 16, 1914, to Louis J. and Louise (nee: Pung) Martin in Fowler, MI. On August 28, 1931, she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1932 she was given the religious name Sister Geraldine. She professed her first vows in 1934 and her final vows in 1940.

Sister Geraldine spent many years in service to others as a teacher and principal. She began her ministry in 1934 at Nativity of Our Lord, Detroit, MI. Places in Wisconsin where she served were St. Joseph, Racine; St. Charles, Burlington; Holy Cross, Kaukauna; SS. Peter & Paul, Green Bay; and St. Bernard, Madison. She also served at Our Lady of Guadalupe, Santa Fe, NM, and Assumption Grotto, Detroit, MI. After moving to Siena Center in 1976 she served as Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator at Siena Center, and Secretary/Receptionist of St. Catherine’s Infirmary. Sister Geraldine became a resident of Lakeshore Manor, Racine, in December 2007 and in February 2008 she moved to Golden Living Center in Kenosha.

Sister Geraldine is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; her sister, Sister Rita E. Martin; and sisters-in-law Pauline and Regina Martin; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; and her brothers, Clem, Greg and Sylvester (Julia) Martin.

Visitation will be in the Siena Center Chapel on Friday, August 28, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a Remembering Service at 2:30 p.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 4:30 p.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Fund have been suggested.

The Racine Dominicans would like to extend their thanks to the staff that cared for Sister Geraldine at Golden Living Center.
