Alice Mae LaMeer, 92, whose many friends affectionately and lovingly referred to as “Tubby,” passed away at St. Luke’s - South Shore in Cudahy on Monday, August 18, 2008.
Alice was born in Hancock, MI, on March 20, 1916, to Manfred and Ethel Grace (nee: Milford) Best. Sadly, her mother died as the result of the flu during WWI when Alice was only 2 years old. Shortly after, her grandmother, Christine Milford, devoted her life to continue Alice’s upbringing. She graduated from Washington Park High School in 1933.
On March 30, 1940, in Holy Innocents Church of Racine, she was united in marriage with the love of her life, Donald F. LaMeer, who preceded her in death on June 5, 1984. Alice was employed for nearly 20 years as a credit department associate at JC Penney’s, retiring in 1981.
Alice was a proud and faithful member of Christ Church United Methodist, where she was active with the UMW-United Methodist Women. Years ago, she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir when the church was located on Grange Avenue. Alice was a tireless election official volunteer at various poll sites in Racine for over 35 years. Above all, Alice’s world revolved around her family.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Michele “Mickey” and Edgar Nowak; grandchildren, Donald Nowak, all of Racine; Denise (Geoffery) Morine of Granville, IL; and Dianne (Charles “Chip”) Nuss of Oak Creek; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Jessica Nuss; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including her church family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Alice was preceded in death by her grandparents, Christine and James Milford.
Funeral services will be held in Alice’s beloved Christ Church United Methodist, 5109 Washington Ave., on Saturday, August 23, 2008, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Awilda Nolla officiating. Interment will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Friday from 5-8 p.m. and in the church on Saturday from 9-10 a.m. In memory of Alice, memorials to Christ Church – United Methodist Women has been suggested.
A heartfelt note of thanks to Alice’s church family and friends for the many prayers and continued support during the past several weeks. Mom loved all of you!
