George A. Mertens

George A. Mertens, age 91, passed away Friday August 22, 2008. George was born in Racine on June 19, 1917, son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (nee: Renke) Mertens and had been a lifelong resident.

During World War II, George proudly served his country as a Medic in the US Army while stationed in England. On July 15, 1950, he was united in marriage to Helen B. Johnson, who preceded him in death January 27, 1988. George was employed with Modine Mfg. for thirty three years until his retirement in 1982. He was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. George was an avid golfer and recorded an ace once, and enjoyed playing cards, working jigsaw puzzles and working in his gardens. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his children, Melody Sorenson of Racine, Susan Meyer of Kenosha; daughter-in-law, Josephina Mertens of Las Vegas, NV; grandchildren, Christine (John) Anderson, Wayne Mertens, Dave Keating, Kim Binninger, Kathy Olsen, Amanda Brey, Debra Mertens, Caroline Mertens; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Rita Deschler of Racine; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents and his wife Helen, George was also preceded in death by his son, David, and nine brothers and sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2201 Northwestern Ave., on Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Ronald O. Crewe officiating. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. Memorials to the American Lung Association have been suggested.
