Mary Stern, age 89, passed away Friday, August 15, 2008, at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints Medical Center. Mary was born in Leipzig, Germany, October 18, 1918, daughter of the late Max and Sara (Nee: Gold) Spira.
On July 10, 1938, she was united in marriage to George Stern who preceded her in death, March 19, 2001. Together they owned and operated the Stern Wastepaper and Iron Company for 40 years. Mary served as vice president retiring in 1975. She was as active member of the Beth Israel Sinai Congregation where she served as a board member, membership chairperson and was a member of Hadassah. She also served as a board member of the Racine Jewish Welfare League.
Survivors include her son, Michael J. (Brenda) Stern of Columbus, OH; her son-in-law, Glenn Wolf of Evanston, IL; her four grandsons, Edward and Elliot Stern, Jeffrey and David Wolf; other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra.
Graveside services will be held at the Racine Jewish Memorial Cemetery, Monday, August 18, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. with Rabbi Martyn Adelberg officiating. Respects/Shiva may be paid at the family home following interment. Memorial to Beth Israel Sinai Congregation or Hadassah have been suggested.
