Suzanne T. Harcus, age 89, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2008, at her residence. Suzanne was born in Detroit, MI, on September 17, 1918, daughter of the late Frank and Eugenia (Nee: Tecktonius) Koelbel.
On May 7, 1946, at St. Edwards in Racine, she was united in marriage to Bruce Harcus who preceded her in death on August 3, 1985. Suzanne was employed as the Woman’s Editor of the Racine Journal Times for many years until her retirement in 1985. She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. Suzanne was actively involved with numerous organizations including serving as President of The Wisconsin–Press Woman, President of The Friends of the Library, Trustee of the Racine Public Library, former board member of the Racine Taxpayer Association and The Visiting Nurses Association, actively involved in public relations with The United Fund, and member of the Racine Symphony Guild. She also volunteered for many years with St. Mary’s Medical Center Auxiliary. Above all she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who will be dearly missed.
Survivors include her two sons, Gregg (Mary Kay) Harcus of Eden Prairie, MN, Andrew (Julie) Harcus of Minneapolis, MN; her two daughters, Beth (Jim) Spangenberg of Racine, Carolyne (Kenneth) Quella of Sherwood, WI; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Justine Rood of Falls Church, VA; nieces, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her nephew, Rick Rood, and a brother, Emil ( Bud) Koelbel.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6400 Spring Street, on Monday, August 25, 2008, at 11 a.m. with Rev. William J. Dietzler officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of Mass. Private interment will be held. Memorials to Friends of the Library or to the Racine Symphony have been suggested.
