Alvin A. Hess, 85,passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at his residence. He was born in Racine on February 11, 1924, the son of Albert and Elizabeth (nee: McDonald) Hess.
Alvin was united in marriage to Helen L. Hess on September 2, 1944, in Dubuque, Iowa. He was a member of Grace Church for more than 60 years. Alvin was the last of the Hess brothers who owned and operated meat and butcher businesses in Racine, including Hess Brothers’ Piggly Wiggly Meats. In retirement he was proud to be a chauffeur for S.C. Johnson. Alvin’s favorite pastime was driving and socializing. He also was passionate about the Cubs.
Surviving are three daughters, Janice (Hilary) Vogt of Racine, Jacqueline (Joseph) Vogt of Louisville, KY, and Jayne (Dennis) Lancour of Racine; grandchildren, Kristina (Harvey Kost) Vogt and Jennifer (Tyler) Johnson, T.J. and Melissa Vogt, Katie (Mike) O’Reilly, Andrea, Derrick and Shannon Lancour; great-grandchildren, Adrienne, Allison, soon to be grandson, Derek, Maykala, Alyssa, Peyton, Dalton, Kaelyn and Austin. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, on February 12, 2003; and a son, James; brothers, sisters and in-laws.
Funeral Services will be held at Sturino Funeral Home on Friday, October 30, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dan Petersen officiating. Private burial will take place at West Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home before services on Friday from 9 a.m. until time of service.
Memorials to Grace Church, 3626 Hwy 31, Racine, WI 53405 and to Muscular Dystrophy Assoc., 2949 North Mayfair Road, #106, Wauwatosa, WI 53222 have been suggested.
