Vera B. Steffens, age 92, of Hales Corners, formerly of Racine, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at Hales Corners Care Center. Vera was born April 3, 1917, in Milwaukee, the daughter of the late Herbert H. and Goldie (Nee: Hinchliffe) Ramthun.
Vera spent her early life in Waterford and was a graduate of Waterford Union High School. On November 1, 1944, in Waterford, Wisconsin, she married Donald C. Steffens, who preceded her in death, April 17, 1994. Donald and Vera moved to Racine in 1959. Vera worked for Allis Chalmers during World War II, Sentry Foods and was a loving, caring mother and wife. She lived in her home in Racine for 40 years. She then was a resident of Hales Corners Care Center.
She is survived by one daughter, Sandra L. Quinn and husband James of Nekoosa, Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Donna Smith of Racine, WI, Gina Chavez of Ottawa, IL, Kelly Drewa of Xonia, WI, Scott Reeves of Mukwonago, WI; six great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Nikki Reeves; and son-in-law, Charles Reeves of Cagle, WI; and her beloved twin sister, Leverne Kebbekus of Denoon, Wisconsin. She is the last in our family of the “Great Generation” and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Rochester Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family on Tuesday at the funeral home from noon until time of service. Memorials to the Racine County Humane Society have been suggested.
