Richard G. Shookman, 98, has gone home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 29, 2009, at his residence. He was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on August 30, 1911, the son of Harley and Minerva N. (nee: Fraze) Shookman.
On May 30 1936, Richard was united in marriage to Helen E. Somero. He was a member of Grace Church for many years. Richard retired from Chrysler Corporation in Detroit, MI. He was an avid fisherman and great outdoorsman. Richard was very talented, an incredible carver, including miniature musical instruments to scale and was excellent at chair caning. Music was his passion; gifted with a beautiful voice, he loved to sing.
Richard is the beloved father of son, Ronald Shookman, of Glendale, Arizona; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy ‘Liz’ (Dr. Robert) Palm of Racine; loving grandfather to Heidi Shookman, Elizabeth Silva, Jennifer (Joe) Altenbach, Julie Palm, Daniel (Kelly) Palm and Matthew (Anne) Palm. Loving great-grandfather to Katy Lewinski, Luke Altenbach, Logan Altenbach, Nathan Palm, Danielle Palm and Marcus Palm; brother, Pete (Arlene) Ortman of Grand Rapids, MI. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, on October 13, 2001; son, Dennis; and infant daughter, Alice.
Private family services will be held with burial at Valhalla Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare Hospice have been suggested by the family.
A special thank you to Dr. James Tierney for the years of his compassionate care. Also, Dr. Paul Durbin, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare Hospice Nurses, Lori, Sherri, Ann, and especially Barb. To Richard’s caregivers, Tuul ‘Lily’ Magvandash and Linda for their loving care, the family will be forever grateful.
Papa Richard, you were the world’s best father, grandfather and great grandfather to all of us.
