Marion W. Gardner

Kenosha - Marion W. Gardner, 90, passed away at Aurora Medical Center in Kenosha on Saturday, October 17, 2009. She was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, on June 23, 1919, the daughter of William and Lillie (nee: Martin) Weitzel.

Mrs. Gardner served with the U.S. Navy during WWII and obtained the rank of Specialist Second Class. She was a Link training instructor, where one of her students was Admiral Richard Byrd. While serving in the Navy she met the love of her life, Lt. William Franklin Gardner. They married in Washington, D.C., on September 30, 1944. When they were discharged, the Gardners moved to California. Before retiring in Florida they lived in Ontario, Canada, where Mr. Gardner was serving as vice president of Ladish and general manager of Tri-Clover division. Mr. Gardner preceded her in death on January 9, 1986.

She moved to the Kenosha-Racine area in 1999.

Mrs. Gardner was a member of the First Church of God in Racine and VFW Post #273 in Madeira Beach, FL, where she served as chaplain and a member of the Honor Guard. She enjoyed playing cards, golfing and spending time with her family and her favorite cat, Angel.

Surviving are her children, Cheryl Schuldt of Tempe, AZ, Robert W. Gardner of Deadwood, SD, Debra “Susie” (David) Simpson of Somers, WI, and son-in-law Joseph H. Carlino of Kenosha. In addition to her parents and beloved husband, William, Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra Carlino; grandson, Joseph M. Carlino; and son-in-law, Darren Mitchell.

Her funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday, October 21, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dave Andrews officiating. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Tuesday, October 20, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial with full military honors will be in West Lawn Memorial Park.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Aurora Hospital and Hospice Alliance for the loving and compassionate care she received.
