Ellen (Hansen) Johnson

Mrs. Ellen Johnson, passed away at the age of 90 on Sunday October 18, 2009, at Becker-Shoop Center with family at her bedside. Ellen was born in Racine, May 17, 1919, daughter of the late Emil and Olga (Nee: Holmen) Hansen.

On May 24, 1964, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church she was united in marriage to Lloyd A. Johnson. Ellen was a graduate of Washington Park High School and St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Racine. She worked in the surgery department at St. Luke's until her retirement. Ellen returned to school and graduated from Carthage College with a B.A. in Music Education. She taught piano lessons and played the organ part-time at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, as well as many other churches in the area. She was a devoted member of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection and enjoyed singing in the choir for years. She volunteered her services with Lincoln Lutheran of Racine for over 30 years. Some of her favorite hobbies included traveling to Denmark and Rheinlander to visit with family, luncheons with her classmates from Nursing School, reading, cross stitch, needlepoint, knitting and her collies.

Survivors include her husband, Lloyd; her sons, Timothy E. Johnson of Saguache, CO, Jerry L. (Sherry) Johnson of Waunakee, WI; her grandchildren, Julie Sheriff of Racine, Brian A. Johnson of Milwaukee, WI, Todd A. (Jenny) Johnson of Madison, Kent E. (Christina) Johnson of Waunakee, WI; her great-grandchildren, Gavin and Ava Sheriff, Cody, Shawn, Vance and Mac Johnson; sister, Rita Hansen of Racine; sister-in-law, Donna Hansen of Wind Lake, WI; brother-in-law, William “Bill” (Dolly) Johnson of Racine; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Gerald Hansen.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, with Rev. Dr. Melvin Miritz officiating. Interment will follow at Graceland Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Wednesday at the Church at 9:30 a.m. until time of service.
