Holger R. Nielsen

Holger R. “Bud” Nielsen, age 93, passed away October 22, 2009, at Wisconsin Veterans Home in Union Grove.

Holger was born in Estherville, Iowa, on September 21, 1916, to Viggo and Anna (nee. Bothilde) Nielsen. The family moved to Racine in 1922.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-45 in the South Pacific stationed in New Guinea, the Philippines and Australia while in the Seabees and later in the Naval Reserves. After the war he worked at various local machine shops and owned Herrick Avenue Auto Parts until he sold the business in 1963. He later joined Hoffert Machines and retired from the company which was later known as Interlake Steel in 1982.

Holger was a member of the Danish Brotherhood for many years. He enjoyed playing cards and cribbage, the Packers, woodworking, and most recently, leathercrafting. He was known for his squirrel feeders, wooden mobiles and many local birds are housed in birdhouses that he built.

Survivors include his daughter, Janet Nelson of Racine; and son, Jim (Cindy) Nielsen of Franksville; grandchildren, Paul (Missy) Nelson, Andrew Nielsen, Annika Nielsen, Erick Nielsen, Craig Johnson, Tim Johnson and Brad Johnson; great-grandson, Christopher Nelson; sister, Betty Cihler; and brother, Art (Karen) Nielsen. He is further survived by nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter and son-in-law, Sonja (Norris) Johnson; brothers, Ruben Nelsen, Carl Nielsen, and Harold Nielsen; sisters, Mary Guerts and Agnes McMahon; and former wife, Irene Kemper Nielsen James.

Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 28, from 5 - 6:30 p.m. Private interment to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Union Grove, Wisconsin.

The family would like to thank the staff of Boland Hall (especially the 3rd floor staff) at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Union Grove for all of their passionate care and concern for Bud and his family.
