Gus W. Hanes

Gus W. Hanes, age 83, passed away Saturday, October 31, 2009, at his residence. Gus was born on October 28, 1926, in Hammond, Indiana, son of the late Eva (Nee: Sofianos) and William Hanes.

He served with the 746th AAF Battalion, 116th ACS Squad, in the United States Air Force from August 1945 to January 1947, and was stationed in Vienna, Austria, and Paris, France. He graduated from De Forest Institute (later DeVry), Chicago, IL. He was married to Betty Tubekis on October 13, 1957, and moved to Kenosha and then to Racine. Gus was a former Ahepan. He was employed at Warwick Manufacturing Electronics in Zion, IL, for seventeen years and at St. Luke’s Hospital, Racine, where he retired after twenty years in 1992. A classic car enthusiast, he enjoyed attending auto shows. Above all he was a loving and caring family man who will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; and daughters, Diana (Richard) White, Joan (Thomas) Durkin, all of Racine; his grandchildren, Kristina, Cassandra, and Ava; brother, Peter (Jane) Hanes of Libertyville, IL; sisters, Catherine (Stanley) Prostko of Kenosha and Helen (James) Carey of College Park, MD; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 5, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Kimissis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, 1335 S. Green Bay Road, Hwy 31, with Rev. John Ketchum officiating. Interment with full Military Honors will follow at Graceland Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Wednesday at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a Trisagion Service at 6:45 p.m. Memorials to the Kimissis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, Wisconsin Parkinson Association, 945 N. 12th St., STE 4602, Milwaukee, WI 53233 or to the American Heart Association have been suggested.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the staffs at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saint Healthcare, Hospice Alliance, Dr. Howard Short, and Dr. Richard Clark for their loving and compassionate care.
