Charles E. Bertermann, 94, passed away peacefully at Hospice House in Pleasant Prairie on Saturday, October 4, 2008, proclaiming his faith in Jesus Christ to his last breath.
Charles was born in Racine on January 31, 1914, to Arthur and Emma (nee: Schimmelpfennig) Bertermann. Charles was baptized at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church by Rev. J.F. Boerger. On September 18, 1937, he was united in marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Bernice M. Rediske. They were happily married for 67 years. They were blessed with three sons: Ralph (Joyce) of Mt. Prospect, IL; John (Janice) of Racine; and Rev. Mark (Ethel) of Richland, Washington; eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Chuck is further survived by sister-in-law Ann Bertermann of Racine, as well as numerous nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice on April 12, 2006; brothers, Harvey and Robert and a sister, Bernice.
Charles was employed by the U.S. Post Office in Racine as a Letter Carrier and Rural Carrier for 38 years, retiring in 1974. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers for 70 years and the Rural Letter Carriers Association and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a faithful and active member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving in many capacities. Worship was the high point of each week for Chuck. He was Secretary-Treasurer of the Wisconsin Federation of the Aid Association for Lutherans for 15 years.
Funeral services will be held at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1501 Erie Str., on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at 7 p.m. with Rev. Daniel Quinn officiating. Christian Burial will take place at West Lawn Memorial Park on Thursday at 10 a.m. Visitation will be at the church from 5 p.m. Wednesday until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and School have been suggested by the family.
