Josephine B. (Zukowski) Hughes

Josephine B. Hughes (nee: Zukowski), 93, passed away early Friday morning October 17, 2008, with her loving family by her side. Josephine was born in Amherst, MA, on October 14, 1915, daughter of the late Casimir and Nathalie (nee: Kotowski) Zukowski.

On May 1, 1948, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Racine, Josephine was united in marriage to Melvin R. Hughes, who preceded her in death on July 13, 1995. She was an active member of St. Rita Catholic Church, where she was a member of Christian Mothers, the REST Program, and with the St. Augustine’s 3rd Order. Josephine will be best remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt who will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her children, Natalie (Thomas) Sherman of Racine, John (Linda) Hughes of Burlington; grandchildren, Vanessa (Scott) Marciniak of Racine, Joshua Sherman (Suzy Calver) of Racine, Patrick (Angela) Elliott of Milwaukee, Michael (Suzanne) Elliott of Burlington; great-grandchildren, Paige, Kiefer, Taggart, Sydney, Savannah, and Brandon; sister, Helen Kalscheuer of Milwaukee; brother, Raymond Zukowski of Racine; special friends, Ellie Harms and Helen Spiering; nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Josephine was also preceded in death by her brother Frank; brother-in-law, Roger Kalscheuer; and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Zukowski.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Rita Catholic Church, 4339 Douglas Ave., on Tuesday October 21, 2008, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Joseph G. Stobba officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass. Memorials to St. Rita Catholic Church or to Red Cloud Indian School, Pine Ridge, South Dakota, have been suggested.
