Harvey E. Glaess

Harvey E. Glaess, 84, went home to be with his Lord and Savior July 13, 2009. He was born June 23, 1925 in Forest Park, Illinois to Alfred and Louise (Zutz) Glaess.

Harvey was selected to the Army Specialized Training Program when he volunteered for the U.S. Army upon graduating from high school in 1943. He was assigned as an infantry Private to Company L, 382nd Regiment of the 96th Infantry Division and was part of the initial wave during the invasion of the Philippines in Leyte where he was critically wounded while scouting for his squad. In recognition of his service Harvey received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Harvey graduated from Loyola University in Chicago with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Philosophy in 1950. In 1951 he received his Master of Arts in Mathematics.

Harvey worked for Armor Research Foundation of the Illinois Institute of Technology until he joined the Carthage College staff in 1959. He was the Soccer Coach at Carthage for 15 years. Harvey married H. Joyce Anderson in 1957, in Chicago, Illinois.

Harvey served Holy Cross Lutheran Church as President, Secretary and Sunday School Superintendent. Harvey was Chief Elder of the congregation at the time of his death. Harvey enjoyed working with his hands and built his home in 1966. He also was an avid gardener and wood worker and built cradles, high chairs and rocking chairs for his grandchildren.

Harvey is survived by his wife of 52 years Joyce; his five children, Harvey (Pattey), David (Juli), Caroline (Tom), Stephanie (David) and JD; 15 grandchildren, Kelsey, Emil, Stacey, Andrew, Allison, Edward, David, Kaesey, Grace, Zachary, Christopher, Katherine, Caroline, Jessica and Jonathan; his brother, Alfred (Kay); his sister, Evelyn Vocelka; many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Wilbur; and daughter-in-law, Teri (JD).

The Funeral service will be held at Holy Cross Lutheran Church on July 17 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Pedro Lopez officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the funeral service begins. Interment will be held July 21, 2009, at 9 a.m.at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove. Burial will be with full military honors.

No flowers please. Memorials can be sent to Lutheran Association of Missionaries and Pilots or Racine Lutheran High School.
