Dave graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Chemical Engineering, and he remained an avid fan of the Michigan Wolverines as well as the Detroit Tigers. He was a long-time member of the University of Michigan Alumni Association. He was united in marriage to Kay Frances Kennedy on August 29, 1958, at the Methodist Church in Henderson, Michigan. The couple moved to Racine in 1962, where Dave began his 30-year employment with S.C. Johnson. During his tenure they lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Mexico City, Mexico, where they developed many wonderful, lifelong friendships. Following his retirement in 1992, Dave formed JST Investments with his wife Kay and son Scott. The company was named for his three sons and invests in rental properties.
Reunions with his brothers and sister always turned into story-telling fests with lots of laughter. For the last twenty years the greatest joy he had was time spent with his grandchildren. Dave especially loved golfing with family and friends at Meadowbrook Country Club, where he recorded three holes in one, the most recent on May 3. He enjoyed travel and had many fun golfing trips with his friends. Dave and Kay traveled extensively and usually found a few golf courses along the way.
Survivors include his loving wife of fifty years, Kay; his sons and daughters-in-law, Scott (Joy) McClelland of Racine, Tony (Ashley) McClelland of Normal, IL, Lori McClelland of Phoenix, AZ; his grandchildren, Jeremie (Angela), Melanie (Eric), Shannon (Eric), Peter, Jack, Will, Sean, Conner, Lilly, Maribelle and Elly; his three great-grandchildren, Cyril, Angel and Tyler; sister and brothers, Jane Widener of New Bern, NC, Alex McClelland of Henderson, MI, Daniel (Sharon) McClelland of Fenton, MI, Doug (Judy) McClelland of Oakley, MI; mother-in-law Erma Criner of Elsie, MI; brothers-in-law Jim Kennedy of Fort Worth, TX ,and Paul (Gayle) Kennedy of Troutville, VA; nieces, nephews; his best golfing buddies, Ron Kraus and Russ Carlson and the other golfers at Meadowbrook; good friends William Gibb and Bill McFadden in Mexico City; the TON golf group in San Antonio, Texas; other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey, on September 10, 2006.
A memorial service will be held at the Maresh-Meredith Funeral Home on Monday, June 1, 2009, at noon, with the Rev. Brad Van Fossen officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service and there will be a reception afterward at the Racine Masonic Center, 1012 Main St. A private interment will be held at a later date. Memorial to the Jeffrey D. McClelland Scholarship Fund or the Chiwaukee Prairie Preservation Fund have been suggested.
