Dorothy Jean Skovsted

MADISON - Dorothy Jean (nee: Hartig) Skovsted, 84, passed away at St. Mary’s Care Center in Madison on Friday, January, 22, 2010. She was surrounded and comforted by her loving family.

Dorothy was born in Racine, WI, on March 26, 1925, to Louis and Annetta (nee: Jensen) Hartig. Dorothy was united in marriage to Cliff Skovsted on June 19, 1948, in Racine, WI.

Dorothy graduated from Washington Park High School and worked in the offices at the Massey-Harris Company prior to starting her family with Cliff.

She was a faithful member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Fitchburg, WI, and years earlier she was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in West Allis and Bethania Lutheran Church in Racine, WI. Dorothy highly valued her friends in life enjoying holiday picnics, card club and women’s groups that met for many years. She and Cliff shared a love for dancing – their polka could not be beat. Dorothy enjoyed painting, quilting and sewing all types of clothing and costumes for her children and grandchildren. Dorothy was a phenomenal cook, but also looked forward to visits to her favorite restaurants and dining with her family. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Dorothy was very proud of her family and loving marriage to Cliff of over 60 years.

Surviving are her husband, Cliff of Fitchburg; their children, Gary (Marlene) Skovsted of Boulder, CO; Carol Skovsted of Wauwatosa, WI, and Cheryl (Patrick) Godar of Madison, WI; grandchildren, Eric (Mary) Skovsted of St. Johnsbury, VT; Sonja (fiancé, Robert Scott) Skovsted of Portland, OR; Holly Godar and Bryna Godar of Madison, WI; one sister, Eunice Hecht of Racine; three sisters-in-law, Betty Hartig, Virginia (Bob) Repa, and Doris Skovsted of Racine; three brothers-in-law, Gilbert Skovsted of Fond du Lac, WI, Pete Christoffersen and Cal Thompson of Racine. She is further survived by many special nieces, nephews, other dear relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by three sisters, Dolores (Milton) Mogren, Irma (Louis) Anderson and June (Tony) Kraemer; four brothers, Louis (Gertrude) Hartig, Clifford (Ann) Hartig, Roy (Emily) Hartig and Harry Hartig; sisters-in-law, Faye Skovsted, LaVerne Christofferson, Beulah Thompson and Bernice (Dick) Dryer; brothers-in-law, Russell Skovsted, Raymond Hecht and Marvin Skovsted.

Her funeral service will be celebrated at Sturino Funeral Home on Friday, January 29, 2010, at noon, with Rev. Richard Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. There will be a visitation at the funeral home on Friday before services from 11 a.m. until service time.

The family wishes to send a heartfelt note of thanks to the wonderful staff of St. Mary’s Care Center for the compassionate care and support that was so tenderly extended to Dorothy during her stay at the Center. God bless all of you!
