Vonnie M. (Peterson) Leopold

Vonnie M. Leopold, age 87, passed away Friday, January 9, 2010, at Wheaton Franciscan All Saints Medical Center. Vonnie, the daughter of Clifford and Myrtle Peterson, was born in Minneapolis, MN, May 24, 1922.

On September 29, 1945, at St. Charles Catholic Church in Minneapolis, she was united in marriage to George B. Leopold. Together they raised their family living throughout the Midwest and retired to their home on the William Fork River in Kremmling, CO. They moved to Racine in 2005. Vonnie was an instructor of pre-school handicapped children for 10 years. She was a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Racine. Vonnie enjoyed gardening, knitting, decorating, traveling and was a fabulous cook. Above all she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be dearly missed.

Surviving are her husband of 64 years, George; three sons, John (Jan) Leopold of Fond du Lac, WI, Mark (Terry) Leopold of Racine, Paul (Patti) Leopold of Broadview Heights, OH; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Brad, and Nathan Leopold, Megan, Matthew, and Adam Leopold, Scott (Brittani) Leopold and Stephen Leopold; a great grandson, Logan Mazurak; a brother, Richard Peterson of Minneapolis, MN; a sister, Betty Merrell of Arvada, CO; other relatives and dear friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Gregory R. Leopold in 2003; and two brothers, Arleigh and Clifford Peterson.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, January 15, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Rita’s Catholic Church, 4339 Douglas Ave., Racine, with Reverend Joseph Stobba OSA officiating. Private interment will be held at Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church prior to Mass from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Cancer Society have been suggested.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Society’s Assets and the Cardiovascular Unit of Wheaton Franciscan All Saints Medical Center for their loving and compassionate care.
