Irene D. (Reichel) Hellesen

Irene D. Hellesen, age 91, passed away on Sunday, December 28, 2008, at Home Harbor. Irene was born in Racine on July 19, 1917, daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Nee: Herda) Reichel and was a lifelong Racine resident.

Irene was a graduate of William Horlick High School, “Class of 1935.” On January 14, 1939, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church she was united in marriage to Elmer Hellesen, who preceded her in death on June 13, 1994. Irene was a member of the Yorkville United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening and had a great love for dogs. Above all she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who treasured time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her three children, Judy (Eddy) Huffman and Rodney Hellesen, all of Racine, and Linda Hellesen of Hawaii; her four grandchildren, Lori (Eric) Jensen of Raymond, Jennifer Huffman (Greg Butler) of Scarsdale, New York, David Huffman (Kay Pendl) of Lake Mills, and Jon (Erin) Huffman of Yardley, Pennsylvania; her four great-grandchildren, Myla and Eden Jensen, Eliza and Nora Butler; sisters, Eleanor (Clarence) White and Valeria Weiss, both of Racine; brother, Eddie (Sylvia) Reichel of Idaho; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters and brothers, Helen, Mary, Viola, Steve, Frank Jr., Sonny and John.

Funeral services will be held at the Yorkville United Methodist Church, 17645 Old Yorkville, Road, on Wednesday, December 31, 2008, at 11a.m. with Rev. Gary Swanson officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Yorkville United Methodist Church, Hope Safe House, or to Countryside Humane Society have been suggested.

Irene’s family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to Kathy Guth, Odyssey Hospice and staff at Home Harbor for their loving and compassionate care.
