Rodoljub Jankovic, “Rudy,” age 89, passed away Friday, December 12, 2008, at Lincoln Village Convalescent Center. He was born in Yugoslavia on August 18, 1919.
During WWII he served as a private in the Yugoslavian Army and was captured by the Germans. He was a prisoner of war from 1941-1945 at Stalag 5B in the Black Forest in Germany. In 1949 he emigrated to the United States at New Orleans and followed a church group to Racine.
Rudy was employed at Racine Steel Castings for a number of years and at Vulcan Materials where he retired in 1986. He was a former member of St. George Serbian Church. Rudy was a very generous and kind man. He was known for his big heart and generosity. Rudy would gladly help anyone in need. He will be remembered for his friendly smile and his kind gesture of giving out candy to everyone he met. Rudy will be dearly missed and leaves behind special friends Judy Schelling, Jackie & Kurt Krueger,Dave and Pat Miller, Mike and Chris Carpino, and Frank DeRango Jr. (his adopted grandson).
Surviving are a grandson and great-grandson in Croatia , other relatives and many dear friends in Racine. He was preceded in death by his wife and son, also of Croatia.
A Prayer service will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. Friends may meet at the funeral home Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Private interment will be held at Graceland Cemetery.
