Sister Virginis Miller, O.P., 95, passed away at Lakeshore Manor, Racine on Wednesday, December 10, 2008.
Hedwig (Hattie) Miller was born March 23, 1913, to Frank Michael and Margaret (nee: Ruetz) Miller in Kenosha, WI. After the death of her parents, she was cared for by her aunt and uncle, Margaret Neona and Joseph Ruetz. On February 2, 1935, she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1935 she was given the religious name Sister Virginis. She professed her first vows in 1937 and her final vows in 1943.
Sister Virginis spent many years in service to others as a teacher, a registrar and a bookkeeper. She began her ministry in 1937 at Nativity, Detroit, MI. From 1949-1962 she served as the registrar at St. Catherine High School, Racine, WI. She also served in Santa Fe, NM, and Osmond, NE. When she moved to Racine in 1976 she served as the Pre-Retirement Coordinator for one year before becoming part of the Finance Office Staff at Siena Center. In August 2007 she became a resident of Lakeshore Manor, Racine, WI.
Sister Virginis is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; brothers, Rev. Edward and Robert Ruetz; sisters, Genevieve Ruetz Collins and Marjorie (Donald) Narducci; sisters-in-law Irene Ivins Miller and Carolyn Ruetz; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; caregivers Margaret and Joseph Ruetz; her brothers, Msgr. Louis J., Hubert, Anthony, Clement Miller and Thomas, Raymond and Joseph Ruetz; and her sister Mary Ruetz.
Visitation will be in the Siena Center Chapel on Monday, December 15, at 8:30 a.m.with a Remembering Service at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Fund have been suggested.
