Samuel A. Barranco

Samuel A. Barranco, age 88, passed away Friday, January 8, 2010, at Lake Country Health and Rehab in Oconomowoc. He was born in Racine on January 31, 1921, son of the late Dominic and Mary (Nee: Cinquegrani) Barranco.

Sam graduated from Horlick High School. Sam enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served during WWII stationed in the South Pacific. On December 28, 1946, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Racine, he was united in marriage to Rita C. Koleske. Sam owned and operated Bronco Petro, a fuel oil and gas company for 20 years. He retired from Massey Ferguson in 1986 after 15 years working as a stationary engineer. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a member of the VFW. He enjoyed gardening and reading but most of all being with his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Rita; six children, Donald (Kathleen) Barranco of Menomonee Falls, Gary Barranco of Racine, Margaret (William Jones) Barranco of Crystal Lake, IL, Diane (Robert) Anderson of Racine, Rita Marie (David) Parker of Fond du Lac, Mary (William) Poehls of Hartland, WI; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Adeline Sackman, Susie Griffin, Rose (Gene) Bracker, Mary Balabuch; other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law in the Koleske family and extended members of the Barranco and Koleske families.. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by four brothers, Frank, Angelo, Joe and John and brothers-in-law, August Sackman, David Griffin and Norb Balabuch.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1533 Erie St., Wednesday, January 13, 2009, at 5:30 p.m., with Rev. John D. Aiello officiating. Private interment with full military honors will be held at the Southern Wisconsin Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Hwy C, Town of Dover. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church from 4 p.m. until time of Mass. Memorials to the family to be used for a local playground -as Sam wished- have been suggested.
